A difficult conversation - Austin Ben Connor - Jenn Smith - Parenting ...

My gram is dying, she has stomach cancer.

We have known this for over a year.

The kids know Nana?is ?sick? and has cancer, but we hadn?t until recently discussed death with the kids. I would say they are all close with their great grandma, but Austin is especially close. He used to spend his weekends and many days with Nana and Big Papa.

I don?t know what the right age is to have this conversation, but at 8 and 9,?the kids have handled it very well. Better than I expected. They aren?t shying away, they still want to see her and spend time with her while they can. I am so proud of them.

At what age have you discussed death with your children? Though each child, and each circumstance, is different, how have they handled it?
